Finding insurance cover that suits your needs might sometimes feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to be.
The role of an adviser is to make the process simple – so you feel empowered to make an informed decision about your situation.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work with a financial adviser, we would like to introduce you to Nicola, one of our experienced insurance advisers at AdviceFirst. She offers a glimpse into her day-to-day work life, shares what fuels her passion for insurance, and debunks a few common insurance myths along the way.

What do you do in your day-to-day as a Financial Adviser?
Most of my days are spent having conversations with people to find out what matters most to them, whether it’s their family, home, or health. From there, I help them find the right insurance coverage to protect those things. I walk them through the details, make sure they understand their options so they can make informed decisions, and stay in touch to adjust their coverage as their life changes.
What do you love most about your job and the work you do?
What I love most about my job is getting to build real relationships with my clients and being able to help them long-term. It’s rewarding to be there for people, especially when they’re going through a difficult period. We get to be there for people in some of the hardest moments of their lives.
What do clients love most about working with you?
I hope my clients find me easy to talk to and approachable. I try to explain insurance in a simple way, and I’m always happy to answer any questions clients may have. Being transparent and responsive is important to me – I want my clients to feel supported and know I’m there when they need help, especially during tough times.
Why is insurance so important?
Having a personal insurance plan in place is important because it protects you from unexpected financial challenges, like illness or accidents. Taking the time to understand your coverage and needs empowers you to make informed decisions that protect both yourself and your loved ones if something unexpected happens.
What are the top things clients should look out for when searching for personal insurance?
There are many different types of insurance covers on the market, so it can be really confusing to figure out how they work and if they are even suitable for you. The best thing you can do is talk to an adviser. It’s our job to wade through all those options and put together the most suitable plan for you. I would also say not to look for the cheapest deal and instead shift your focus to the value of the insurance benefits.
Debunk the worst myth you hear about insurance.
The worst myth I hear is that insurance companies will never pay a claim. This is so far from the truth! In my experience, paying claims have always been a priority for insurance companies, and some companies even have clauses in their policy wordings to make this happen.
What are your hobbies and passions outside of work?
If I’m not at work, you’ll most likely find me in a theatre. I have tutored singing & musical theatre for many years. I also sit on the trust of a charity committed to recognising talent and excellence in Auckland & Northland community theatre (NAPTA).
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My Dad always told me “Don’t worry about things that haven’t happened – and if they have happened, make a plan to deal with them”. It’s this advice that has taught me to be logical, pragmatic, and not to stress about (almost!) everything.
